Meet The Crew

Supporters and paddlers from Kimbolton Canoe Club from 1996 - 1998.

This website was originally set up as a homepage for the 1998 DW effort of David Anderson and Peter Dove. DW 1998 has now come and gone, and the site has moved into DW more generally, but still retains this corner dedicated to some of the people who have been a part of Kimbolton School Canoe Club.

1. The Senior Doubles Paddlers

1. Peter

(Pete) Peter Dove
Student (Undergraduate engineer, Bradford University)
1995 junior doubles 16th (21:01:14) (partner Ben Davies)
1996 junior doubles 10th (20:17:26) (partner Robert Paton)
1998 senior doubles 19th (22:51:58) (partner David Anderson)
Peter steered both times as a junior double, and steered 75 miles of the senior in 1998. Says he could do DW again - but not for a while!
Recognisable by trademark red cap (now back by popular demand), and formerly by close studying of feet whilst paddling.

2. Dave

(Dave) David Anderson - david@dw-perspective.org.uk
Student (Undergraduate mathematician, St. Hugh's College, Oxford)
1996 junior doubles 19th (21:41:12) (partner Adam Brown)
1997 junior doubles 11th (20:18:42) (partner Adam Brown)
1998 senior doubles 19th (22:51:58) (partner Peter Dove)
1999 senior singles 26th (21:52:26)
"On DW 1998 I kept thinking 'This is the worst moment of my entire life.' Mostly because it was in a particularly funny Blackadder sketch I'd seen 3 days earlier, although I hadn't just ruined a £400,000 turnip and wasn't about to be slaughtered by a naked Tunisian sock salesman."
David owns a surely complete set of DW merchandise, including sweat shirt, 50th event sweat shirt, T-shirt, baseball cap, tie, yellow mug, blue mug, 50th event mug, badge and sponge as well as the medals and wrist bracelets; His culinary efforts also won him the 1997 DW camp crew "Most Hideous Meal" award.

1998 senior singles 29th (21:06:28)
Shaun has become the first club member to race and complete the senior singles.
At around noon on Easter Monday, he was asking me when I thought it was reasonable to restart training for next year!

3. The Coaches

1. Mr. Ward

(Mr. Ward) David Ward
Founder and Coach, Kimbolton School Canoe Club
CDT teacher and head of White House, Kimbolton School.
1991 - 1999 coached 50 successful junior doubles crews, 2 senior doubles crews, 2 senior singles crews and 1 junior/veteran crew (see club history).
1993 senior doubles (24:24:16) (partner Jane (Mrs.) Ward)
1999 junior/veteran 8th (partner Hannah Toms)
As a senior singles paddler, Mr. Ward completed the Waterside series in 1997 and in 1999 was a newly qualified veteran, and was the last crew to finish on the Tideway after a heroic performance following partner Hannah's trip to and return from hospital.

2. Dusty

(Dusty) Terry Rhodes
Outdoor pursuits person, Kimbolton School.
Support and counsel to crews and substantial behind the scenes fixing.
Led Mr. Ward's support crew in 1993.
Had the dubious pleasure of spending Easter Monday 1998 following the crews down the Tideway on a rescue boat!

4. Former paddlers and supporters

1. Si

(Si) Simon Newby
Student (Undergraduate architectural engineer, Sheffield University)
1994 junior doubles 22nd (22:12:43) (partner Simon Philipps)
1995 junior doubles 10th (20:03:52) (partner Matthew Wood)
1996 junior doubles 4th (19:01:22) (partner Simon Philipps) (club record)
Simon was a much appreciated supporter for Shaun, Peter, David and the other school crews in 1998.
Recognise by the top bike!

2. Trevor

(Trev)  Simon Philipps
Student (Undergraduate, Nottingham Trent University)
1994 junior doubles 22nd (22:12:43) (partner Simon Newby
1995 junior doubles 9th (19:53:35) (partner Ben Saw)
1996 junior doubles 4th (19:01:22) (partner Simon Newby) (club record)
If you were putting together a Kimbolton DW dream team, then former captain Trev would be one of the first names down on the list, and his 1998 and 1999 support was very much appreciated. Should you ever discover that he's in the area, you should still remember to lock up your children! Now a member of Nottingham Kayak Club; how long can it be until the DW comeback?

3. Mr. Dove

(Mr. Dove) Robert Dove
Occupation unknown
1995 & 1996 junior doubles support for son Peter
Having completed the final leg of the journey (Westminster to Home) after DW 1998, Mr. Dove said to Peter, "That was fun; who are you doing it with next year?"

4. Mr. Anderson

(Mr. Anderson) Colin Anderson
Chartered Accountant - http://www.colinanderson.co.uk
1996 & 1997 junior doubles support for son David, 1998 senior doubles, and 1999 senior singles.
Watch out for the internationally famous blue jumper, as seen in Canoe Focus!

5. Dr. Newby

(Dr. Newby) Martin Newby
Doctor of medicine.
Experienced and capable supporter for son Si and daughter Rachel from 1994 to 1996.
Provided much-valued support for Peter and David in 1998.
When I told him after 90 miles that it was the worst moment of my life, just beating the one 5 miles previously, he replied that I shouldn't worry; a much worse one would surely be along in 5 miles time!

6. Matt

(Matt) Matthew Wood
Student (Undergraduate, University of Nottingham School of Medicine)
1995 junior doubles 10th (20:03:52) (partner Simon Newby)
1996 junior doubles 9th (20:15:37) (partner James Dormer)
Finished in the top top ten as a junior twice before watching in 1997, before retiring to a life of pies and sleep. Matt (together with David) was the 1997 Under 18 C2 National Champion, and has the gold medal to prove it!
