Meet The Crew

Supporters and paddlers from Kimbolton Canoe Club from 1996 - 1998.

This website was originally set up as a homepage for the 1998 DW effort of David Anderson and Peter Dove. DW 1998 has now come and gone, and the site has moved into DW more generally, but still retains this corner dedicated to some of the people who have been a part of Kimbolton School Canoe Club.

7. Rob

Rob Robert Paton
Student
1996 junior doubles 10th (20:17:26) (partner Peter Dove)
1997 junior doubles 8th (19:42:57) (partner Alex Middleditch)
With as solid a claim to be Kimbolton's finest paddler as anyone, Rob missed DW in 1998 to concentrate on A-Levels, after a brief Waterside A appearance and streaking home 11 minutes clear in the 1998 Schools' Nationals. So for 1998 the delightful (!) singing was from the bank and not the boat.

8. Adam

Adam  Adam Brown
Student
1996 junior doubles 19th (21:41:12) (partner David Anderson)
1997 junior doubles 11th (20:18:42) (partner David Anderson)
Another paddler who's delivered the goods twice on DW, in 1998 his brother's house moving prevented Adam from fulfilling an annual paddler's dream of watching other canoeists suffer for a change. He told me he would love to do the senior DW one day...

9. Laura

Laura  Laura Wood
Student (U6th, Kimbolton School)
1996 junior doubles 38th (24:45:08) (partner Rachel Newby)
1997 junior doubles 33rd (23:50:46) (partner Suzanne Beadles)
The youngest Kimbolton paddler to have done Devizes To Westminster twice (the first time as a fourth year), Laura is possessed of not only undoubtable guts but also unfortunately the "can't be bothered" syndrome which struck brother Matt, and so in 1998 discharged her duties as club captain from the bank!

10. George

George  Alexander Middleditch (Alex)
Student
1997 junior doubles 8th (19:42:57) (partner Rob)
Denied the club record on his first attempt in 1997 by the unpredented low flow, George/Alex missed DW 1998 to concentrate on A-Levels rather than follow Si, Trev and David in doing DW in his final year at school. Must be kicking himself now having seen the flow...
Schools' National Marathon Champion 1998.

11. Barry

Barry  Robert Jones
Student, Bristol University
1997 junior doubles 9th (19:47:01) (partner James)
1999 senior doubles 34th (23:17:41) (partner Rory Ferguson)
A key component of the 1997 team which was rated by coach Mr. Ward as the best ever, the sheer enormity of Barry's arms is enough to guarantee his place in club history. Barry scored a fantastic success in the senior K2 in 1999, aided and abetted by Rory Ferguson of Bryanston (hiss), 12th in 1997. I like Rory because he's a top bloke, but also because in 1997 he finished just seconds behind myself and Adam, after leading us for days 1, 2 and 3.

12. James

James James Dormer
Undergraduate, Cambridge University
1996 junior doubles 9th (20:15:37) (partner Matthew Wood)
1997 junior doubles 9th (19:47:01) (partner Robert Jones)
A former team captain, in 1996 James (whilst paddling with David) wrapped a boat, W-shaped, around some rocks in the 1996 Sella Descent in Spain.

13. Sarah

Sarah  Sarah Gash
Student (Birmingham University, School of Psychology)
1995 junior doubles 38th 25:34:08 (partner Julie Morgan)
Previously left out of this site through lack of photo, we can now see Sarah in her full glory (artist's impression, um, well artistically illiterate mathematician's impression). Part of the all-conquering 1995 team, in her own words "Julie and myself were the best crew to do DW in a long time and anyone who is anyone will remember us, or maybe not!!!"

14. Julie

Julie  Julie Morgan
Student (Chichester College)
1995 junior doubles 38th 25:34:08 (partner Sarah Gash)
Along with Sarah the last Kimbolton paddler to have the "pleasure" of completing DW in a Mystere, so much respect for that. Only a cynic would say the artist's impression is the same as Sarah but with the colours changed.

15. Rachel

Rachel  Rachel Newby
Student
1996 junior doubles 38th (24:45:08) (partner Laura Wood)
Along with her parents, Rachel is possibly Kimbolton's most experienced supporter, having supported brother Si in 1994 and 1995 and then the team in 1997-1999, as well as proving her own powers in 1996.

16. Becky

Becky  Rebecca Notley
Student
1996 junior doubles 31st (23:55:43) (partner Georgina Lilley)
1997 junior doubles 21st (22:06:56) (partner Georgina Lilley)
Former head girl and team captain Becky and partner Georgie in 1997 became the first Kimbolton girls to complete Devizes to Westminster twice, a feat matched only (about 2-3 minutes later!) by Laura. Also joint holder of the DW Camp Crew "Giggling Girly 1997" award.

17. Georgie

Georgie  Georgina Lilley
Student.
1996 junior doubles 31st (23:55:43) (partner Rebecca Notley)
1997 junior doubles 21st (22:06:56) (partner Rebecca Notley)
In addition to the feats listed above (see Becky), Georgie and Becky have trained with the England junior ladies squad and were only narrowly beaten by rivals from Barking and Dagenham for the prize of fastest girls' crew in 1997, and robbed of the school girls' record by the lack of flow.

18. Suzy

Suzy  Suzanne Beadles
Student (U6th, Kimbolton School).
1997 junior doubles 33rd (23:50:46) (partner Laura Wood)
Another gutsy paddler, Suzy was an indispensable part of the 1997 girls' team which won the inaugural girls' team trophy for Kimbolton.

19. Miranda

Miranda Miranda Badcock
Student (Law, University of Sheffield)
1996 junior doubles 20th (21:48:19) (partner Zoë Bee) (then girls' record)
Miranda broke the club girls' record for Devizes To Westminster in 1996 when she and partner Zoë were the first girls home. Provided much appreciated support in 1997.
School girls' record since broken by Hannah Roberts & Jenny Nelson in 1998 with 21:19:58, and then Alison Pearce & Tara Nichols in 1999.

20. Zoë

Zoe  Zoë Bee
Student (School of medicine, Bristol University)
1996 junior doubles 20th (21:48:19) (partner Miranda Badcock) (then girls' record)
Former club girls' record holder and head girl Zoë has not been sighted near a canoe since summer 1996, proving that some paddlers do go on to lead normal lives!
