DW Challenge versus DW stage race outcome

Posted by Jim Morrissey (jim.morrissey@seaweed.ie) (from 140.203.14.58) on 14 December, 2000 at 19:24

Next year sees the first running of the 4 day K2 DW Challenge which is hoped to attract a wider participation in this awesome race . From recent DW publicity it is hoped that top marathon crews wishing to put some high mileage training under their belt will take part in the staged challenge.

I,m wondering how seperate the DW Challenge will be from the four day racing event and if there is a strong likelyhood of fast Challenge crews influencing the outcome of the racing event. Would it not be very easy for racing singles, etc. to prearrange/ organise washes from friendly fast K2 Challenge crews and hitch a ride each day of the race, to their great advantage.

I have already witnessed K1 'teams' in the singles event racing together (from the same club etc.) and the speed advantage is obvious (especially on the lonely but vital first day), the influence of top K2 crews charging through the field would i think throw the cat among the pidgeons and lead to controversy.

Looking at the rule book i see:

(g) Taking pace and wash hanging from any vessel not in the RACE is forbidden.

Maybe there are safeguards already planned by the race organisers to preserve the racing integrity of the stage race (i.e. different start times for the challenge etc.) Any thoughts?

Apologies if this issue has already been put to bed.

Regards

Jim
