The DW starts at Devizes Wharf on the Kennet & Avon canal, before joining the River Thames 54 miles later at Reading, and then the tidal Thames another 54 miles on at Teddington (after which there are no more locks); the race finishes 17 miles later at Westminster bridge by the Houses of Parliament.

All the locks on the Kennet and Avon Canal and those on the River Thames
must be portaged on the towpath side of the lock except where otherwise
shown in the following diagrams and by no other route (Rule 1). These
have been agreed with the British Waterways Board and the Environment Agency
(NRA). Engineering work is often being performed on the course.
